Keanaaina Indicted by Grand Jury

Jacqueline Keanaaina, a 26-year-old woman from Kona, has been indicted by a grand jury on 18 charges relating to two incidents, one involving an officer-involved shooting and the other an attempted burglary. She made her initial appearance in court on March 28, and her trial has been set for August 15 before Judge Wendy M. DeWeese. Keanaaina remains in custody on $100,000 bail. The charges include possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition, unauthorized possession of personal information, and attempting to steal a vehicle, among others. The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney has emphasized that the charges are allegations and Keanaaina is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

East Hawai'i: Officer and Firefighter Honored

The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaiʻi has named Puna Patrol Officer Michael Sailer as 2022 Officer of the Year, and Hawai‘i Fire Department Fire Captain Jon Wayne Boteilho as Firefighter of the Year. The awards were presented on March 25, 2023, during a ceremony in Hilo.

Officer Sailer was recognized for his outstanding work in solving a kidnapping and torture case in Volcano, where he located a victim who was being held against his will and saved the victim's life. On the other hand, Captain Boteilho was honored for his exceptional mechanical skills and dedication to the Respiratory Management Program at the Pāhoa fire station, which has contributed significantly to the department's readiness and saved them time and money.

The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai‘i selects a police officer every month for Officer of the Month, and Officer Sailer was previously recognized for June 2022. Meanwhile, the Firefighter of the Year nominee is submitted to the Club by the fire chief.

$750K in Damages to Old A Restroom

Hawaii County officials have confirmed that a structure fire has destroyed the only working bathrooms at Old Airport Beach Park in Kailua-Kona. The fire, which was reported at 3:51 a.m., caused an estimated $750,000 in damages, and fire officials are currently investigating the cause of the fire. The incident occurred just months after a public-private partnership with the Kona community worked on painting and replacing the roofing at the facility. It is unclear how long it will be before the bathrooms reopen. Witnesses who may have additional information are asked to contact the Police non-emergency line.

Police Request Public’s Assistance In Locating Missing Puna Man Anson-Ely Saragosa

Hawai‘i Island police are requesting the public’s assistance locating 43-year-old Anson-Ely Saragosa, who is known to frequent the Kurtistown and Mountain View areas.

He was last seen in Mountain View on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. wearing a grey t-shirt and grey shorts.

Saragosa is described as local with a brown complexion and a medium build, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 160 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on Saragosa’s whereabouts is encouraged to call the police department’s non-emergency number at (808) 935-3311.

Hawaii Electric Power Outage

On Tuesday evening, Hawaii Electric experienced power outages that affected 20,000 residents at around 6:00pm, crews were able to get 75% back with power within 30 minutes. While internet and cable service company, Spectum, experience an outage in North Kona to Waikoloa around 8:00pm. The Big Island Daily contacted Spectrum to inquire about the issue, and had been restored.
