Free Culinary Learning Opportunity for Adults Opens in Kona

A new opportunity for adults interested in the culinary industry has been announced in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. HCC-Pālamanui and Laiōpua 2020 are offering a free learning experience in basic culinary skills and techniques, including savory and baking principles, local Hawaiian Regional cuisine, and cooking methods for meat, poultry, vegetables, salads, and desserts. The program is funded by a grant from the County of Hawaii and aims to not only provide culinary skills but also to help participants take the next steps towards employment or further education in the industry. The program will be led by Pālamanui Chefs Fernand Guiot, Catherine Harlan, and Paul Heerlein, Associate Professor/Coordinator Culinary Arts, with classes held in the evenings in the college’s culinary arts classroom/kitchen and in Laiōpua 2020’s commercial kitchen. The spring cohort begins on April 18 and ends with a class hoike on May 11, 2023. To apply for this free culinary learning experience, interested individuals can visit https://www.laiopua.org/culinary-program. Laiōpua 2020 is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing social, recreational, vocational, economic, educational, and cultural opportunities and infrastructure to Native Hawaiians, including the communities of the Kealakehe ahupua`a.
